Home Renovations by Prominent Paints
We live in a house built in the 70’s, so home renovations were inevitable for us and we have been prolonging it for way to long. A few months ago we woke up one morning and decided to actually just start the renovations.
Our plan for the first leg of the home renovations were to plaster the face brick walls, paint all the walls, remove the standard brown (ugly) skirting and replace it with a nice wide white skirting as well as paint all the door frames white. One thing that has always bugged me in this house was the brown veneer doors and cupboard doors, you know the really old style, but I’ve always been a bit scared (but very tempted) to just paint them as I was worried it would look tacky and affect my resell value. (I worked in the property industry for way to long)
Prominent paints asked me to review their products and offered some of their paint to get the ball rolling and we were delighted to work with them. I needed a wall paint that I could wipe easily as I have small children that love to touch the walls and they do occasionally write on them too. We decided on a colour that was not a standard Prominent Paints colour and it was no problem for them, they mixed it up and they have it on record so I can go back anytime to get more mixed. We put them to the test and our second batch was a perfect match!
We had so many questions regarding the paint we would use for the steel frames and cupboard doors, and the helpful staff at Prominent Paints offered great advise and suggestions to guide us in making the correct decision. They explained the steps that will help us get the perfect finish.
We used the following products:
For the previously painted (yellowish??) steel door frames we used the PROMINENT PREMIUM EGGSHELL ENAMEL (This is a low sheen enamel)
For the wood veneer doors we sanded the doors lightly, painted on the PROMINENT PREMIUM UNIVERSAL UNDERCOAT and finished it off with the PROMINENT PREMIUM EGGSHELL ENAMEL . (This is a low sheen enamel)
For the walls we used the PROMINENT SELECT SHEEN which is “A low VOC high quality velvet smooth acrylic sheen emulsion for interior & exterior walls”. I was extremely happy with the coverage we got from this paint.
I started with the cupboards while the walls were being painted and found that it is easier just to remove the doors, paint the undercoat with a foam roller and apply the eggshell enamel with a spray applicator. It was not a fun job but the final product is so rewarding it was worth it. The eggshell enamel can be applied with a foam roller, brush or spray gun.
We filled all the little holes in the walls and sanded it well to get a perfect finish on the wall. For us the wall preparation took up most of the time, but the amount of preparation all depends on the finish that you require.
Be sure to keep an eye out for the room reveals of the 3 bedrooms that we did while doing the review for Prominent Paints.
