Genius storage solutions for an organised room
The biggest design dilemma we have when creating kids and even adult spaces is to add enough and stylish storage to a space. Good storage solutions can make or break a room design so I’m always on the hunt for fun and stylish ways to add storage to spaces. Today I’m sharing some of my go-to storage solutions that can be used in nurseries, kid rooms as well as the playroom. Storage Bags Teddy bears and soft toys seems to have babies in my house and I have recently done a major purge of unused soft toys, I still have loads that are still loved by me and the kids,…

Woodlands Nursery
When you imagine a woodlands nursery theme you’d think of earthy tones, foxes, bears and all the other cute and friendly creatures that we find in the woods. Our next The Collaborative woodlands nursery room reveal has all of that and more. Instead of going too rustic we opted for a more modern look by adding more greys to the forest greens and browns and of course a pop of mustard is a must. Taxidermy soft toys has become a huge trend and La Fede will be launching a whole range or taxidermy cuties at Kamers Makers this summer. Catch them and some amazing brands on The Collaborative stand at…

Floral Posh Nursery
Floral nursery by The Collaborative. Some combinations are just winners…. and florals, dusty pinks and a touches of greenery will without doubt always make a good design combo. This girly girl floral nursery nook can be replicated in a small area or a bigger room design with ease. The elements used in this setup can be easily transferred into an older bedroom setup as well as other parts of the house. We love the vintage feel of this room. We also like the fact that although it’s a girly room design, we have only used touches of pinks in the room. And can we just take a minute to adore…

Monochrome Nursery
A monochrome nursery is always a winner and currently one of the most popular schemes for nurseries and even toddler rooms. It has become the go to scheme for gender neutral nursery themes for parents, and it is a great way of incorporating high contrast stimulation for promoting that teeny baby’s visual development. LittleME dangles are perfect for this. How do you create a monochrome nursery or monochromatic room scheme? Firstly you need to understand what monochrome schemes are all about. Monochromatic colours are all the colours (tones, tints and shades ) of a single hue. Monochromatic color schemes are derived from a single base hue and extended using its…

Amelia’s floral nursery tour
You’ve all seen sneak peeks of Amelia’s GORGEOUS new floral nursery on Mayalief’s insta feed and I’m so excited that Little Interiors has the honour of doing a room tour of this gorgeous room. Mom, Michelle, owner and maker of Mayalief has transformed Amelia’s bedroom into a Pinterest worthy bedroom while also incorporating some lovely local talent in the room. Michelle is such an inspirational mom-boss-maker! She pours her heart into everything that she makes and designs, and it shows in all the details of each product. Pregnancy keepsakes
I love gorgeous keepsakes and special ways of keeping a memory alive especially when it comes to my kids. I love making and keeping imprints and prints of my kids hands and feet, just because they will never be that little again and the kids also love seeing how small they were. Although there are many ways of keeping these memories alive, there are a few that stand out quite a bit. I just had to share my current two keepsake crushes with you. Ultra Sound Embroidery You do get lovely frames, books and boxes to put your precious ultrasound or 3d Sonar pictures in but to have this embroidered…

South African Chic Girls Room
A minimalist contemporary girls room with a South African flair – because local is chic! In this room reveal we wanted to again incorporate what we love about our beautiful South Africa, into a very chic girls room. Modern simplistic designs inspired by Scandinavian styles merged with touches of simplistic South African inspired design. This room is the perfect fit for any tween to teen girl. South African Chic We decided to use a blush pink in this room as it is more of a mature pink compared to other pinks and it is an amazing colour to combine with metallics. Using blush pink in an all white interior like…

This country, located on the most southern tip of Africa has the ability to offer the best of everything this continent has to offer. South Africa offers an amazing canvas rich with colour and texture. How can you use your high contrast dangles?
Our LittleME high contrast dangles are amazing when using them with our frames, but they bring out very creatives sides of moms when they are one the move or just do not have the tools necessary!! As a standard we recommend using the high contrast dangles on the steel frame that fits over the changing table as well as the wooden baby gyms. They also work great on the move when attached to the car seat handle or the headrest of the car. Chenel from Life with James & Jaxson shared how Jaxson rolls when they are out and about. We often receive images from happy mommies showing us how…

DIY Slime
If you have a kid that has any access to YouTube this post if for you!! Your child has probably stumbled upon a few DIY tutorials by kids and adults alike showing your child how to make slime. DIY SlIME is definitely a buzzword in my daughter’s vocabulary. My daughter, Alexia, comes to me with at least two new DIY Slime tutorials a week, if not more. We have tried to make DIY slime with anything from borax and shaving cream to replacements like shampoo to toilet paper….. yes toilet paper!!!!!! Needless to say, most of them do NOT work (for us at least) and the word slime is not…

This circus themed bedroom is a stunner and awoken every bit of creative play within us. Our brands really pulled out all the stops to make this an amazing reveal a real extravaganza. The Collaborative – Kalahari nursery
When you think of the Kalahari, a baby nursery is not the first thing that comes to mind. But with the rising trend of not having a full nursery, we could not resist the temptation to create a nook that will be able to fit into any grown up space but that can still function as a functional space for mom and baby. Our mood board showed off a slight industrial look with elements that you would find in the African Kalahari region. The overall look of this Kalahari Nursery was very subdued by all the natural colours but the pops of green brought the room to life. We were completely…

The Collaborative – PLAY
To PLAY means to engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose. In the latest, The Collaborative room reveal we got to do just that, PLAY. We wanted to create an area with bold colours and a serious accent on FUN! We wanted to create an accent wall to create a focal point with the teepee, and I love how corners disappear when you paint them dark. How cute is the teepee bunting that we draped over the grey teepee! Another accent that we created was with the alphabet cards that was hung on the wall with wooden pegs on a string. We’ve added…

Decorex 2017
This year Decorex SA has introduced the Milk Jug cafe to the Decorex shows, an area specifically dedicated to kids, surrounded by kids decor and interior inspiration. Little Interiors was honoured to have teamed up with an amazing group of kids decor brands to design a drool-worthy nursery space. My aim was to create a nursery design that will catch the eye of not just the expecting parent, and for the design to be a talking point by stepping out of the normal box of what a nursery should look like. I wanted to create an industrial Scandinavian look with pops of steampunk and an adventure theme combined. Concrete, steel…

What to expect from an Interior Design Consultation
You’ve got the budget but you do not know where to start, it’s normal for anyone to feel overwhelmed by the choices and deadlines when doing an interior space. Sometimes it helps getting a professional in to help you in the form of an interior consultation to help with some small decisions or to take over the whole project. So what exactly can you expect when you hire an interior designer? Firstly I will need to know what kind of room you would like to do and what your own or child’s ideas and needs are in this room. You will then need to supply me with a budget for…

Alexia’s confetti room
I could not wait to share this confetti & pastels room designed for a very special girl. My brief from the very adamant 6 year old was that she wanted a room with pink, purple, gold and glitter with unicorns and confetti – a brief I’m sure that most 6 year-old girls would give and that most mothers dread, so I did an interpretation on this look in a bit more sophisticated yet age appropriate look. I started with a very neutral grey base and added in some pastels to the bedding and headboard and rugs. I designed a custom headboard inspired by the silhouettes of dutch houses. On the…

No Fuss Nursery
Sometimes less is more and sometimes more is more. The brief for this nursery was to create a gender neutral, stylish and clutter free area form mom and baby. I did not use a specific theme in the room but the LittleME Cacti crib sheeting inspired a more tribal feel but I did not want the theme to overpower the room. The Umthi Meyer von Wielligh lamp is made from solid Ash wood and an amazing feature in this room. I added in pops of colour with the shelving, bedding and ottoman but I kept the rest of the colours and finishes very natural and neutral. The room is not…

How to incorporate high contrast stimulation decor in a nursery
We get asked often to do the LittleME high contrast stimulation dangles in softer colours to fit into a specific nursery colour scheme, which we can do {and it has it’s place} but it defies the object of high contrast stimulation. Read more here about the benefits of high contrasting colours for infants. If you are doing a popular black and white themed nursery then you have no problem incorporating these kind of items in the nursery, but when your colour scheme is more neutrals or pastels you might feel that the black, white and red might be to harsh for the room. This is where functionality is very important in…

Demetri’s Toddler Room
This toddler room for Demetri encapsulates everything about being a boy. Little Demetri is almost 3 and loves trains, rockets, robots and planes. I did not want to bind the room with only one theme, I would like to have the option to tweak the room as he grows up, to match his personality and likes. I wanted a real boyish room since he was still in his nursery so I had a custom cross stitch piece made for him, inspired by the nursery rhyme “What are little boys made of?”. This became the inspiration behind this room. Demetri has taken over his big sisters room seen bellow in the…

Home Renovations by Prominent Paints
We live in a house built in the 70’s, so home renovations were inevitable for us and we have been prolonging it for way to long. A few months ago we woke up one morning and decided to actually just start the renovations. Our plan for the first leg of the home renovations were to plaster the face brick walls, paint all the walls, remove the standard brown (ugly) skirting and replace it with a nice wide white skirting as well as paint all the door frames white. One thing that has always bugged me in this house was the brown veneer doors and cupboard doors, you know the really old…

The Collaborative: Winter Wonderland
Winter Wonderland The first chills of winter came creeping in this weekend and this means it is the best time to share our WINTER WONDERLAND room with you. This is one room that exceeded our expectations by miles. We used shades of blue and mint and played with pops of pink and green and loads of textures to create this tranquil, dreamy and light room design. We wanted to imitate a fairly tale like design, yet still sophisticated enough for older kids. The headboard is framed by fairy light filled stars hanging right above it, turning the room into a magical space when the lights go out and naturally doubles as a night…

The Collaborative – Swoon
The hottest buzzword in the new season is “Swoon”. Not only because we’ve been anticipating the reveal of the new Swoon range by La Fede but also because it so perfectly describes the look and the feel of the next room reveal by The Collaborative. Think florals, dusty pinks, golds, greys, luxury and style! This swoon nursery was inspired by giant flowers and the lavish colour scheme and is right on the mark with current interior trends and style. Although very trendy, this is a style that is timeless. We created a more modern version of this look but it will look super stylish with more traditional furniture pieces. A…

The Collaborative – Retro Games Room
We decided to take a little step away from the super trendy toddler rooms and we had a bit of nostalgic fun by creating a quirky, retro gaming inspired room for boys. We wanted recreate some memories from our own childhood in a very simplistic design. We used some vintage furniture pieces that was sent through from Re-Trend and mixed it up with more modern decor pieces and versions of our favourite tv-games as well as a A-frame play tent by Little Slumber. We asked little Max to test the room out to see if he’ll enjoy it as much as us. We hit the nail on the head, it took some…

The Collaborative – Boho Chic Room
Boho chic is top of the current trend lists, the style is influenced by both bohemian and hippy styles. We used florals, pastels and macrame as key elements in making this boho theme work well. We used more pastel colours which makes an amazing nursery theme but can also be ideal for an older child by adding more jewel tones. We love using natural wood with this room. Macrame has made such a huge comeback and this art of knotting cords and ropes has been stepped up a notch since it was popular in the 70’s and the more modern updated look even pops out in jewellery. See some Macrame projects here. Supplier list for…

The Collaborative – The Unicorn Room
Unicorns, bunnies, rainbows and sleepy clouds…. that’s what girls are really made of. The unicorn room is a busy, fun and eclectic room to inspire and bring creative play to every little girl! This room was purely designed with fun in mind, and boy did we play. We are loving the bunny sleeping bags from Krokenoster, and we’re completely in love with the new brand Mooma, all their original designs are gorgeous. We love the combination of pink and mint with the addition of some muted colours throughout. Pink can be an overwhelming colour, especially if mom is not a big fan of it. By using pink with subtle and complementary…

The Collaborative – Greenery
Greenery is the Pantone colour of 2017 so it is only fitting to have our first room reveal from the 3rd The Collaborative shoot named accordingly. Zach’s Room Tour Tanielle from @watchzachgrow allowed us a sneak peek into her newly done room for her little Zach. This gorgeous little boy has the most beautiful smile and the vibrant room really shows of his energy. Zach’s favourite colour is green so Tanielle decided on go with a soft mint colour to go with a black and white colour scheme. Mint is a colour that is unisex so by adding the super bunnies and thunder bolts the room is unmistakably turned into a boy’s room with the mint softening it just enough. I love all her DIY touches to the room especially the book trolley, it is so functional and an…

What brand reps mean for South African small businesses
“Brand repping” is a reinvented way of advertising. It has been around forever and has recently been a growing marketing tool in South Africa for small businesses using people with a good eye, trendy style and growing online following. You can get high quality photo’s of your products in real life settings and you get to reach a far bigger audience. For any small business with a low marketing budget this is ideal. You do however get different types of brand representatives and it is important to know what will be a better fit for your business. Bloggers have been around for ages and would generally do paid posts or reviews on…

Guest Post: Guide to the perfect children’s room
Guide to the perfect children’s room Guest post by Carike from Kidz City. A child’s bedroom is more than just a place to sleep, it is their playground, workshop and world. It is important that this space reflects their little personalities. But for a parent, it is easy to get lost in this realm of children’s interiors. Planning The first thing to do is understand what your child or children want. They have certain interests or ideas, and it is those which we will need to base the design around. These themes could be something simple like a colour or animal to a favourite movie or storybook hero. Write down…

The Collaborative – Vintage Car Room
The Collaborative – Vintage Car Room We all know boys like cars and everything that comes with it. We had so much fun playing while we were setting up this look. We used elements of everything boys love from comic books to kites, to create a look that every boy will love. The main theme stayed cars/transport and the gasoline cupboard was the main feature of this look. I have previously done a very similar looking mood board for an older boy. Colour psychology plays a huge role in how much your will use of a specific colour in a room. In this room we used a large amount of red with some…

I got this for my baby as his first Christmas gift. He was only 2 months old as I would have like him to remain rear facing in his car seat for as long as possible this was perfect. Room Tour – Peyton’s nursery
Peyton’s mom, Hesan, did a pretty awesome job with her nursery and I’m very excited to share her nursery reveal here. She had a very clear vision about the nursery design and with very little input from me, executed it very well. I must add that baby Peyton will be the first girl after 3 boys, so mom wanted something very special. Hesan’s not a big fan of pink so we decided that coral will work well with the grey, gold and rose gold that she already picked. It makes the room girly but not overly pink. She brought in a little mint with the…

African inspired nursery This theme has always been my favourite nursery theme. Both my kids had a version of an African inspired nurseries. All our fellow South African suppliers had some awesome contributions for this room. The colour scheme was a wash of white and natural colours with pops of green coming from the Lielies kids nest, the Madiba doll from Fox and Moon and the pillows in the crib. Animals have been a very big feature in the nursery trends and nothing beats some of South Africa’s most loved animals. The Drakensberg shelf made an appearance again, and was a perfect fit for this room. By utilising items like the…

Having a room in a black and white colour scheme has a lot of advantages: A black and white room can help to calm the crazy of all the colourful toys that a…

Hoppity poppity EB is coming to town
“EB”, as my daughter refers to the Easter bunny, is coming to town and I’m loving all the bunny decor around. I felt inspired by the glass bunny jar with pearlised hazelnuts that I bought from Woolworths a while back. I had one of those happy accidents with it when I tried to get the stickiness from the tape off with nail polish remover, and accidentally took of the gold, but decided to leave the bunny gold. I just love it more now. I love jar storage and I always suggest using it in a nursery to keep the cotton buds and other small necessities on hand. Why not…

How important a budget is when you design a room
When you get to redo a child’s room or do a brand new nursery you can get overwhelmed by what you find, and spending too much can be a reality. This is why planning and budgeting form such a crucial part of a room design. Impulse purchases can be detrimental to a budget, so try and steer clear of those. Start with a design and then price all the items and extras like labour and tools in a spreadsheet. Then you can see what you need to bargain hunt for or completely remove. It is key to have it on paper (or pc) in one place. Keep track of your spending,…

Out of Africa Nursery
For our first baby, we did not know the gender so I designed a neutral Jungle themed nursery. We are doing the same with the second baby and I am using some of the elements that I used in the jungle nursery in the new baby room. I used second-hand furniture in the previous room but I really wanted some new items to update the look a bit as we are in a different house too. I would have loved to source all the furniture locally but the Scandinavians, aka IKEA (Nevada Furniture), stole my heart with their simplistic design and good prices I might add. I am however sourcing local designs for the decor.…

It reflects Alexia’s personality perfectly, gives her a place to enjoy her music, reading and drawing in a relaxing environment. In this post I will be going through the whole process of designing this room. Firstly I came up with the concept and I made a mood board with all the ideas that I could find. We were in the process of buying a new house so I did not have any type of room in mind so I could not narrow down the ideas to what will work in the specific room. Here…
