Guest Post: Guide to the perfect children’s room

    November 11, 2016 /

Guide to the perfect children’s room Guest post by Carike from Kidz City. A child’s bedroom is more than just a place to sleep, it is their playground, workshop and world. It is important that this space reflects their little personalities. But for a parent, it is easy to get lost in this realm of children’s interiors. Planning The first thing to do is understand what your child or children want. They have certain interests or ideas, and it is those which we will need to base the design around. These themes could be something simple like a colour or animal to a favourite movie or storybook hero. Write down…

    Baby shower gifts that mommies love {Win}

    November 3, 2016 /

To many of us, baby shower gifts are regular items on our shopping lists. At some point you start running out of ideas or there is, “GAASP”,no gift registry. Here’s a list of items that moms really like to receive, and won’t always ask for. TEETHING NECKLACE for mom. I just love the necklaces from Jele Bebe, they are stylish and practical too and mom is not bound to only wear it while she still has a baby. CROSS OVER BABY VEST, especially newborn vests. These are so much better to put on and take of over that small little head. You can get them from Edgars.  MOSQUITO REPELLENT for babies under…

The Collaborative – Vintage Car Room

    October 25, 2016 /

The Collaborative – Vintage Car Room We all know boys like cars and everything that comes with it. We had so much fun playing while we were setting up this look. We used elements of everything boys love from comic books to kites, to create a look that every boy will love. The main theme stayed cars/transport and the gasoline cupboard was the main feature of this look. I have previously done a very similar looking mood board for an older boy. Colour psychology plays a huge role in how much your will use of a specific colour in a room. In this room we used a large amount of red with some…

    Holiday 2016 lust-haves {Win}

    October 24, 2016 /

Whether we like it or not, Christmas holidays are around the corner and that means Jingle Bells, beach days, cocktails, and loads of fun in the sun. Here are my holiday season lust-haves for summer 2016.   1. Benbat OLY mirror: The drive to the beach is far for some of us, especially when you have a baby. I got this for my baby as his first Christmas gift. He was only 2 months old as I would have like him to remain rear facing in his car seat for as long as possible this was perfect. My little boy is now 2 and still asks me to switch on his “friend” as the mirror has…

    Room Tour – Peyton’s nursery

    October 14, 2016 /

Peyton’s mom, Hesan, did a pretty awesome job with her nursery and I’m very excited to share her nursery reveal here. She had a very clear vision about the nursery design and with very little input from me, executed it very well. I must add that baby Peyton will be the first girl after 3 boys, so mom wanted something very special. Hesan’s not a big fan of pink so we decided that coral will work well with the grey, gold and rose gold that she already picked. It makes the room girly but not overly pink. She brought in a little mint with the…

The Collaborative – African inspired nursery

    October 13, 2016 /

African inspired nursery This theme has always been my favourite nursery theme. Both my kids had a version of an African inspired nurseries. All our fellow South African suppliers had some awesome contributions for this room.        The colour scheme was a wash of white and natural colours with pops of green coming from the Lielies kids nest, the Madiba doll from Fox and Moon and the pillows in the crib. Animals have been a very big feature in the nursery trends and nothing beats some of South Africa’s most loved animals. The Drakensberg shelf made an appearance again, and was a perfect fit for this room. By utilising items like the…

The Collaborative – Vintage Floral Bedroom

    September 20, 2016 /

Spring is in the air and the sweet smell of blossoms are teasing our senses. What a perfect way to kick of our The Collaborative 2 room reveal, a Vintage floral room! This room is a little girls dream, designed for her to get lost in their own perfect little whimsical world. Our colour scheme incorporated some pinks, greens and golds. We wanted to create a room that was current, but had vintage feel, so by combining some lovely modern designs with soft floral fabrics, vintage prints and some lace the space will have any little girl feeling like a fairy princess.                       My favourite…

    Room Tour – Hudson’s room

    August 15, 2016 /

This room tour of Hudson is by Chandre from Styled_by_mama. She is mom to Hudson and a brand representative to some local South African brands on Instagram. Hudson is almost two and it was now time to upgrade his room to a toddler room. She did not bind herself to just one theme, so the room and decor will have a long lifespan as Hudson gets older. The black and white colour scheme is still extremely popular in nurseries and children’s rooms. Having a room in a black and white colour scheme has a lot of advantages: A black and white room can help to calm the crazy of all the colourful toys that a…

    August 10, 2016 /

The Collaborative is the brain child of Chantelle {La Fede designs} and Mariette {Little Interiors} with the goal get mostly South African small businesses to collaborate to create beautiful room settings with locally designed and manufactured items. Each Collaborative shoot includes 3 room designs. Collaborative 1 included a Girl’s Playroom, a Monochrome Boy’s Room and the last a Tribal Woodlands Nursery. Tribal Woodlands Nursery   We added a little South African flair to the room with the “Drakensberg” shelf. Although we mostly stuck with the monochrome theme again, we used a combination of greys, blues and natural wood to soften the design. The Collaborative is the brain child of Chantelle {La Fede designs} and Mariette {Little Interiors} with the goal get mostly South African small businesses to collaborate to create beautiful room settings with locally designed and manufactured items. Our first The Collaborative room design was a playroom for girls, see it here. The second room reveal is a monochrome boys room. The room was designed with a young child or a toddler in mind, creating a fun, playful yet modern bedroom setting. We deliberately combined some of the most used themes in 2016, showing that you do not necessarily have to have stick to one theme ONLY, especially in a monochrome room setting. We added pops…

Our first The Collaborative room design was a playroom for girls. I created a moodboard using soft colours and fun designs to create a space that reflects a dreamy, girly playroom. We used a lot of quircky pillows and animals in the design. The moodboard is used to put a collection of ideas together to create an overall look. Often the design changes slightly in the end result but the overall look stays the same. A moodboard is very helpful in…

High contrast colours for newborn babies

    April 14, 2016 /

Your newborn baby is a perfect little human that can feel you, hear you, smell you, taste what your feed him but can’t see you all that clear yet. This is one of the last and arguably the most important sense to develop after birth. You hear a lot of talk about high contrast colours, but why you might ask. Your baby’s retina is not fully developed yet and can only really see the difference between black and white or very high contrasting colours. By stimulating this sense you are helping the brain make sense of different shades, shapes and colours. This article from Dr Sears sums up how important…

Hoppity poppity EB is coming to town

    March 25, 2016 /

“EB”, as my daughter refers to the Easter bunny, is coming to town and I’m loving all the bunny decor around. I felt inspired by the glass bunny jar with pearlised hazelnuts that I bought from Woolworths a while back. I had one of those happy accidents with it when I tried to get the stickiness from the tape off with nail polish remover, and accidentally took of the gold, but decided to leave the bunny gold. I just love it more now.       I love jar storage and I always suggest using it in a nursery to keep the cotton buds and other small necessities on hand. Why not…

How important a budget is when you design a room

    October 6, 2015 /

When you get to redo a child’s room or do a brand new nursery you can get overwhelmed by what you find, and spending too much can be a reality. This is why planning and budgeting form such a crucial part of a room design. Impulse purchases can be detrimental to a budget, so try and steer clear of those. Start with a design and then price all the items and extras like labour and tools in a spreadsheet. Then you can see what you need to bargain hunt for or completely remove. It is key to have it on paper (or pc) in one place. Keep track of your spending,…

    How to space decals

    September 3, 2015 /

For a while now decals has been a trendy wall decor option, not only because it can be removed easily but also because it is so easy to install. It can however be a little daunting when you have to space the smaller decals an equal distance from each other. I have a fairly accurate eye and can pick up a slight difference easily and it would bug me until I fix it so I looked for an option that is easy and accurate. You will need to do the following: 1. Determine the width (and height) you want them to be apart. 2. Cut a piece of cardboard…

Spring is in the air and this means spring cleaning time for most of us. I use this time to reflect on what I really need and what has gathered dust because it has not been used for a year. I LOVE teepees and I love a good DIY even more!! They look so cute in a room and the kids can have fun indoors and outdoors. I’ve had this project in my to-do folder for some time. The pattern, instructions and fabric has been lying nicely next to my sewing machine for MONTHS but finally I got to do it this weekend and it is so darn cute!! Alexia is already planning her first camping trip in the playroom. I used the tutorial from Pink Toes & Powertools, and it cost me the price of dowel sticks (around R10 for a pole). I used old bull denim curtains that I was not using anymore,…

I told you a few weeks back about the wonderful products that Mamas & Papas has on offer here, and the one thing that was the most striking to me about the store was the beautiful colours of the fabrics and accessories. This inspired me to do a full design board using their beautiful colours and awesome products to create a beautiful Mamas & Papas nursery. I used the Harbour collection in the ivory colour and some accents from the Timbuktales nursery range. This delightful nursery collection is fresh and modern. Charming curves and soft lines create this idyllic look and feel. The 3 piece Harbour collection boasts a full sized wardrobe, changer that converts…

    Baby to toddler room

    July 7, 2015 /

Realizing that your baby is now a toddler is a shocking thing! It feels like you had a tiny helpless baby 5 minutes ago and now they are exploring and climbing on to things and all of a sudden their needs become a lot different to a baby’s need. It is now time to look at what you need to change to make the nursery more safe and suitable for their current needs. At this stage you can still keep your nursery theme the same. First look at what you can keep: 1. Can you use your cot as a toddler bed if they are ready for it?  If not…

    Crochet/Doily Rug

    May 22, 2015 /

I have always felt that we have a limited selection of rugs in SA. I needed something a bit more girly, NOT SHAGGY and easy to clean for a toddler room. I have been drooling over crochet doily rugs. I had some spare t-shirt yarn and I started with my own crochet rug, take note that I have never even held a crochet needle in my life so this was all new. I did a lot of reading and watched a lot of tutorial just to get the stitches correct, but I’m not doing to bad. I chose t-shirt yarn because I wanted a bulkier look. Here is my attempt so far.…

A room perfect for your princess

    May 6, 2015 /

With the birth of England’s new Princess, Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, the world is in Princess mode. A little sparkle of hope brightened all our lives even for just a day. Inspired by the fuss over this little Princess I created a princess inspired mood board to commemorate this event. Whether you want to design a more quirky, fun princess themed room or more classic, grown-up room, is up to you. It is a theme that makes use of pinks, lilacs gold, silver and stones. The brighter the colours the more quirky, the lighter the shades the more classic the theme becomes. Items as simple as netting draped above the bed…

    April 24, 2015 /

We all know the damage the sun does to our skin and we all make sure to teach our kids from young to protect their skin, but how aware are you about your eyes. My eyes are very sensitive to bright light so I always have my sunglasses on or nearby, never really thinking about my child’s eyes. Bellow see some alarming facts about what damage the sun can do. OV Optics has started the Sunglasses at School initiative to make parents and schools aware of the damage the sun can do and offers a solution to protect our children from this damage. They have a range of “child-proof” sunglasses for…

    DIY: Baby and Toddler beanbag

    April 22, 2015 /

I wanted to create a custom bean bag for my baby and 3 year old for our holiday house. I found this pattern and tutorial from Straight Grain (see also fabric toy barrel post) very helpful and easy to use. I made 2 (one toddler and one baby one) in one day. I used a durable bull denim that I found at a local fabric store.  Bellow find the links to the pattern and tutorial.   Here is little Demetri sleeping in his custom bean bag. It was such a lifesaver to have the beanbag during summer at our beach house with a baby, and the bigger kids love to…

    African inspired nursery

    April 2, 2015 /

African Inspired Nursery Finally the nursery reveal that I’ve been dying to share. I had so much fun doing this nursery, it definitely came with its share of challenges for such a tiny room.  I did not have a massive budget, so a lot of the items were DIY projects and it was a teeny-tiny space so I had to be very creative with the space layout. I will be sharing some of the DIY projects in the coming weeks. This was the initial moodboard I did for the room I made changes to the location of the crib and the type of changing station I was using. This was due to some…

    DIY: Knitted pouf/ottoman

    March 20, 2015 /

I fell in love with the knitted ottoman as soon as I saw it. I had to have one, but they were not available in SA yet, so I had to make one. I did all my research, and found countless tutorials on how to do this, but noting gave me the specific details I needed as my knitting skills were basic and I knew nothing about crocheting. I did not know how much t-shirt yarn (I decided to do it with that) to use, and could not find the same colour (very specific grey) in more than 6 small balls. So I went to our local fabric shop and…

    Staying on budget with Gumtree

    March 16, 2015 /

Designing a nursery does not necessarily need to cost you an arm and a leg, you need those, and should be within your means. In today’s financial climate it is not always possible to spend money on extravagant items for a nursery, even the basic items can cost a fortune. Budget should not prohibit you from having the nursery you’ve always wanted. www.gumtree.co.za offers buyers (and seller) the opportunity to buy (or sell) products that are previously loved, securely and conveniently. I am going to design a nursery with secondhand items only found on the Gumtree site, in my area, proving that you can have the nursery you want ON BUDGET! Modern Upscale Gumtree Nursery:…

Roses are RED and nurseries TOO!!

    February 9, 2015 /

Red nursery designs are not comon but as everything turns red during the month of love, it is just fitting to have some red inspiration. Red really does make your heart beat faster for a second when you walk into a room, that’s why you need to be extra careful when using red, but do not be afraid of it. It is a very passionate and warm colour and can evoke different emotions in different people, and can bring out some volatile behavior. For this reason we would not use red wall to wall in a nursery, but in accent colours around the room. You want your nursery to be a…

    Out of Africa Nursery

    September 4, 2014 /

For our first baby, we did not know the gender so I designed a neutral Jungle themed nursery. We are doing the same with the second baby and I am using some of the elements that I used in the jungle nursery in the new baby room. I used second-hand furniture in the previous room but I really wanted some new items to update the look a bit as we are in a different house too. I would have loved to source all the furniture locally but the Scandinavians, aka IKEA (Nevada Furniture), stole my heart with their simplistic design and good prices I might add. I am however sourcing local designs for the decor.…

Designing for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder

    September 2, 2014 /

I stumbled upon Medina Sam from MK Kids Interiors, a UK based interior designer, via social media a while ago and I have been following her work and blog since then. One of the amazing services she offers is an interior design service specifically for Autistic children. Here are some tips from Medina to design a fitting room for a child with ASD: Click here for the blog post. “In designing a room for your child with ASD: 1. Create a simple layout of the space, one that will give your child easy access to the things he/she will need.  If you have limited space, where your child will use one room…

How to make a small nursery work

    August 25, 2014 /

You really do not need a massive space for a nursery, a baby’s spacial needs are pretty basic, but what you do need a lot of is STORAGE! Here are some tips on how to make a small space work well for a nursery: * PLANNING: This is probably the most crucial part of using a small space. You need to make sure that your furniture will fit in the space BEFORE you buy and that you can add everything that you need. You can do the following: 1. Start by measuring the room and drawing it out, do the same with your furniture and cupboards and cut them out. Now you…

    Superhero Theme

    August 20, 2014 /

All boys adore superheroes, some never outgrow it either. I love the idea of doing a nursery in a superhero theme and of course what toddler would not love waking up to their favourite hero every morning. This is not only a theme for boys, so girls don’t need to feel left out. How to create the look: * Use bold colours like red, blue, yellow or green; bring in pinks or purples for girls. * Get inspiration from cartoons and the tv shows – use a pattern or image *You don’t need to use one character only. * Don’t be afraid to use different fabrics *Use some old toys that are still in…

Buying a cot or crib? Is it safe?

    August 15, 2014 /

Are you buying a cot or crib? Did you know that there are certain regulations regarding a cot or crib for your baby? Most people do not know about this here and are actually using cribs/cots deemed unsafe by these regulations, but luckily more South African manufacturers are working towards the UK & Australian regulations, which is great, but it is still not a big advertising point here as consumers are not educated about the regulations as they are not enforced yet.  Using a hand-me-down crib or that awesome vintage find that is just gorgeous, may just be detrimental to your child or their health. And yes, our parents did survive those…
