Woodlands Nursery
When you imagine a woodlands nursery theme you’d think of earthy tones, foxes, bears and all the other cute and friendly creatures that we find in the woods. Our next The Collaborative woodlands nursery room reveal has all of that and more. Instead of going too rustic we opted for a more modern look by adding more greys to the forest greens and browns and of course a pop of mustard is a must. Taxidermy soft toys has become a huge trend and La Fede will be launching a whole range or taxidermy cuties at Kamers Makers this summer. Catch them and some amazing brands on The Collaborative stand at…

Monochrome Nursery
A monochrome nursery is always a winner and currently one of the most popular schemes for nurseries and even toddler rooms. It has become the go to scheme for gender neutral nursery themes for parents, and it is a great way of incorporating high contrast stimulation for promoting that teeny baby’s visual development. LittleME dangles are perfect for this. How do you create a monochrome nursery or monochromatic room scheme? Firstly you need to understand what monochrome schemes are all about. Monochromatic colours are all the colours (tones, tints and shades ) of a single hue. Monochromatic color schemes are derived from a single base hue and extended using its…

Furniture sizes for kids
I’m currently busy doing a playroom that will need to accomodate a 4 year old, a 7 year old and occasionally older as well as younger kids. This huge age group has definite changes in furniture needs so I opted to look at bigger furniture than the average toddler furniture available as this sized furniture is not suitable for older kids. Here are some guidelines for choosing chair and table sizes for your kids: The easiest way to check if a chair is the correct hight for your child is for them to sit on it. Their feet should touch the floor with their knees bent at 90 degrees. A…

South African Chic Girls Room
A minimalist contemporary girls room with a South African flair – because local is chic! In this room reveal we wanted to again incorporate what we love about our beautiful South Africa, into a very chic girls room. Modern simplistic designs inspired by Scandinavian styles merged with touches of simplistic South African inspired design. This room is the perfect fit for any tween to teen girl. South African Chic We decided to use a blush pink in this room as it is more of a mature pink compared to other pinks and it is an amazing colour to combine with metallics. Using blush pink in an all white interior like…

We heart South Africa nursery
We heart South Africa In the next nursery reveal we want to share how we love and experience South Africa. This country, located on the most southern tip of Africa has the ability to offer the best of everything this continent has to offer. South Africa offers an amazing canvas rich with colour and texture. With the use of natural raw materials like wood and concrete and colours mimicking the African landscape against this very white background we were able to create a modern minimaslist look into the beauty of this land. We ❤ South Africa…..This is our local! Suppliers used in this style session: La Fede Designs: Heirloom…

The Collaborative – Autumn inspiration
The sun is rising a little bit later each morning and the leaves are turning into all shades of brown and burnt orange. Autumn is creeping up and slowly letting us get use to the cooler months approaching. I’m not a winter person at all but these in between seasons are really the prettiest months of the year. This inspired us to create a style session inspired by the colours of autumn. A feast for the eyes and such a warm and inviting colour scheme. We played around with the amazing products that the collaborators sent and came up with different visions of autumn! A few of our favourite products…

We are starting stories…
We have very exciting news! We have teamed up with Popsiebelle as their official South African online retailer. The Popsiebelle brand aims to create products to get your kids to explore their imagination and create creative stories that they imagine up. A few of my personal favourite products from their range are: The monster pillow and spray: My little boy old had terrible nightmares and fears of monsters so I grabbed the monster spray bottle that came with the monster pillow and we sprayed all of the monsters out of the house. So no more monsters live here, and it was such an easy way to get him to not be…

The Collaborative – Love is in the air
It is only fitting that we start our first The Collabortive room reveal for 2018 embracing the month of love with pinks and reds taking the lead role for the month and this reveal. Many of us grew up hearing that pink and red do not go well together, a big fashion no-no, although pink is a hue of red. But come modern times this clashing combo is not frowned upon at all and using it in the correct amounts and adding some dazzling metallic and you create a spectacular, sophisticated space. We created a gorgeous neutral setting adding pinks and reds as accents to embrace our ‘Love is in the…

Here are some tips to incorporate Ultra violet into your home: Accessories, Accessories, Accessories. This is the easiest way to bring any colour, especially daring colours like Ultra Violet, into your interiors. It is also the most economical way. The Collaborative – PLAY
To PLAY means to engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose. In the latest, The Collaborative room reveal we got to do just that, PLAY. We wanted to create an area with bold colours and a serious accent on FUN! We wanted to create an accent wall to create a focal point with the teepee, and I love how corners disappear when you paint them dark. How cute is the teepee bunting that we draped over the grey teepee! Another accent that we created was with the alphabet cards that was hung on the wall with wooden pegs on a string. We’ve added…

What to expect from an Interior Design Consultation
You’ve got the budget but you do not know where to start, it’s normal for anyone to feel overwhelmed by the choices and deadlines when doing an interior space. Sometimes it helps getting a professional in to help you in the form of an interior consultation to help with some small decisions or to take over the whole project. So what exactly can you expect when you hire an interior designer? Firstly I will need to know what kind of room you would like to do and what your own or child’s ideas and needs are in this room. You will then need to supply me with a budget for…

Alexia’s confetti room
I could not wait to share this confetti & pastels room designed for a very special girl. My brief from the very adamant 6 year old was that she wanted a room with pink, purple, gold and glitter with unicorns and confetti – a brief I’m sure that most 6 year-old girls would give and that most mothers dread, so I did an interpretation on this look in a bit more sophisticated yet age appropriate look. I started with a very neutral grey base and added in some pastels to the bedding and headboard and rugs. I designed a custom headboard inspired by the silhouettes of dutch houses. On the…

How to incorporate high contrast stimulation decor in a nursery
We get asked often to do the LittleME high contrast stimulation dangles in softer colours to fit into a specific nursery colour scheme, which we can do {and it has it’s place} but it defies the object of high contrast stimulation. Read more here about the benefits of high contrasting colours for infants. If you are doing a popular black and white themed nursery then you have no problem incorporating these kind of items in the nursery, but when your colour scheme is more neutrals or pastels you might feel that the black, white and red might be to harsh for the room. This is where functionality is very important in…

Demetri’s Toddler Room
This toddler room for Demetri encapsulates everything about being a boy. Little Demetri is almost 3 and loves trains, rockets, robots and planes. I did not want to bind the room with only one theme, I would like to have the option to tweak the room as he grows up, to match his personality and likes. I wanted a real boyish room since he was still in his nursery so I had a custom cross stitch piece made for him, inspired by the nursery rhyme “What are little boys made of?”. This became the inspiration behind this room. Demetri has taken over his big sisters room seen bellow in the…

The Collaborative: Winter Wonderland
Winter Wonderland The first chills of winter came creeping in this weekend and this means it is the best time to share our WINTER WONDERLAND room with you. This is one room that exceeded our expectations by miles. We used shades of blue and mint and played with pops of pink and green and loads of textures to create this tranquil, dreamy and light room design. We wanted to imitate a fairly tale like design, yet still sophisticated enough for older kids. The headboard is framed by fairy light filled stars hanging right above it, turning the room into a magical space when the lights go out and naturally doubles as a night…

The Collaborative – Swoon
The hottest buzzword in the new season is “Swoon”. Not only because we’ve been anticipating the reveal of the new Swoon range by La Fede but also because it so perfectly describes the look and the feel of the next room reveal by The Collaborative. Think florals, dusty pinks, golds, greys, luxury and style! This swoon nursery was inspired by giant flowers and the lavish colour scheme and is right on the mark with current interior trends and style. Although very trendy, this is a style that is timeless. We created a more modern version of this look but it will look super stylish with more traditional furniture pieces. A…

The Collaborative – Retro Games Room
We decided to take a little step away from the super trendy toddler rooms and we had a bit of nostalgic fun by creating a quirky, retro gaming inspired room for boys. We wanted recreate some memories from our own childhood in a very simplistic design. We used some vintage furniture pieces that was sent through from Re-Trend and mixed it up with more modern decor pieces and versions of our favourite tv-games as well as a A-frame play tent by Little Slumber. We asked little Max to test the room out to see if he’ll enjoy it as much as us. We hit the nail on the head, it took some…

The Collaborative – Boho Chic Room
Boho chic is top of the current trend lists, the style is influenced by both bohemian and hippy styles. We used florals, pastels and macrame as key elements in making this boho theme work well. We used more pastel colours which makes an amazing nursery theme but can also be ideal for an older child by adding more jewel tones. We love using natural wood with this room. Macrame has made such a huge comeback and this art of knotting cords and ropes has been stepped up a notch since it was popular in the 70’s and the more modern updated look even pops out in jewellery. See some Macrame projects here. Supplier list for…

We are loving the bunny sleeping bags from Krokenoster, and we’re completely in love with the new brand Mooma, all their original designs are gorgeous. Guest Post: Guide to the perfect children’s room
Guide to the perfect children’s room Guest post by Carike from Kidz City. A child’s bedroom is more than just a place to sleep, it is their playground, workshop and world. It is important that this space reflects their little personalities. But for a parent, it is easy to get lost in this realm of children’s interiors. Planning The first thing to do is understand what your child or children want. They have certain interests or ideas, and it is those which we will need to base the design around. These themes could be something simple like a colour or animal to a favourite movie or storybook hero. Write down…

The Collaborative – Vintage Car Room
The Collaborative – Vintage Car Room We all know boys like cars and everything that comes with it. We had so much fun playing while we were setting up this look. We used elements of everything boys love from comic books to kites, to create a look that every boy will love. The main theme stayed cars/transport and the gasoline cupboard was the main feature of this look. I have previously done a very similar looking mood board for an older boy. Colour psychology plays a huge role in how much your will use of a specific colour in a room. In this room we used a large amount of red with some…

Holiday 2016 lust-haves {Win}

I got this for my baby as his first Christmas gift. He was only 2 months old as I would have like him to remain rear facing in his car seat for as long as possible this was perfect. How to space decals
For a while now decals has been a trendy wall decor option, not only because it can be removed easily but also because it is so easy to install. It can however be a little daunting when you have to space the smaller decals an equal distance from each other. I have a fairly accurate eye and can pick up a slight difference easily and it would bug me until I fix it so I looked for an option that is easy and accurate. You will need to do the following: 1. Determine the width (and height) you want them to be apart. 2. Cut a piece of cardboard…

Roses are RED and nurseries TOO!!
Red nursery designs are not comon but as everything turns red during the month of love, it is just fitting to have some red inspiration. Red really does make your heart beat faster for a second when you walk into a room, that’s why you need to be extra careful when using red, but do not be afraid of it. It is a very passionate and warm colour and can evoke different emotions in different people, and can bring out some volatile behavior. For this reason we would not use red wall to wall in a nursery, but in accent colours around the room. You want your nursery to be a…

In this post I will be going through the whole process of designing this room. Firstly I came up with the concept and I made a mood board with all the ideas that I could find. Once you go black……
I have recently had a conversation with a friend about a coffee shop’s decor, and I realized that the common perception of dark grey or black walls is still that it makes a room look smaller, dingy and cluttered. I have a different opinion about dark walls, the dark colours actually makes the walls appear receded. I am also one of those that like to dab my paintbrush into the lighter part of the colour card but I have always adored dark walls in a room. To me it feels that the wall disappears and everything you put on or in front of the wall becomes the focal point and…

Washi Tape
I have recently been asked to consult on a room that was already done beautifully, but the designer aka mom felt like the walls did not look finished as she wanted it. Because of the roughness of the wall the border still looked unfinished. The most common solution would be to put a wooden half-round dado rail but because of the amount of wood already in the room it would have been to much. I opted to go for a washi tape that resembles a road as it compliments the motorbike design. It was a first time experiment with washi tape and I was really impressed. It is super easy…

Disney Themed Room – UPDATE with inspiration board
I have been keeping my eyes open for some interesting ideas for Alexia’s Disney Themed Room. This is my inspiration board so far… I must admit that it is difficult to keep my ideas in one place at a time…there are so many different characters that I would like incorporate. I am worried that if I’m not careful the room could end up looking like “Disney gone wrong” with nothing tying into each other. I like the idea of using one character with a quote on the wall tied in with the magic stars connecting them all, seen in the inspiration board. A couple of small touches like the Peter…
