Interior Design & Aromatherapy

So not only do we all love to have a gorgeous interior, but also a home that smells amazing! I was wondering how to achieve it without allowing harmful chemicals from candles in your home, and also realistically you can’t have candles burning 24/7 throughout your whole home.

See why we need to relook at burning candles here.

Like colour, scents and smells can trigger emotions in us. So how can we incorporate scents in our home to create the desired emotions we would like home to associate with?

  • Diffusers
  • Scent Bags
  • Reed Diffusers
  • Room Spray

Diffusers

I find diffusers to be the best way to make my house smell amazing, and BONUS, I am getting ALL the therapeutic benefits from using good quality essential oils. You can also add diffusers to fit in with the decor in each room to make it part of your design scheme. Find some BEAUTIFUL, great quality diffusers here.

Scent Bags

Scent bags are a great way to make linen, clothes or cupboards smell amazing.

Here is a quick recipe to use:
– 1/2 cup uncooked rice
– 1/4 cup Epsom salt
– 1 cup lavender buds
– Muslin cotton drawstring pouch
– 40 drops Lavender essential oil

Add everything into the bag, drop your essential oils in and give it a good shake.

Reed Diffusers

So I love a reed diffuser, BUT like candles, using reed diffusers with FRAGRANCE oils and not good quality essential oils brings all the chemicals into your space. Yes you are then breathing in chemicals and not getting any therapeutic benefits. I love using reed diffusers in my guest room that does not have a diffuser, and also in my bathrooms.

Make your own reed diffuse.

You will need:
– Glass bottle with narrow neck
– 8-10 Diffuser Reeds
– Reed diffuser base
– 8-10% Good quality Essential Oils

DIY reed diffuser BASE:
 – 50-60ml of carrier oil (Safflower, Almond or Fractionated coconut oil)
– 2 tablespoons of Isopropyl alcohol 99.7%

Room Spray

Using a room spray can be a quick way to make a room smell amazing, again using good quality essential oils can really make a difference in the benefits you get from this spray. ie. Using oils that support sleep can be used as a pillow spray helping you to really have a great nights sleep.

Here is a quick DIY room spray I love:

– 5 Pumps Witch Hazel
– 10 Drops Lavender (Adults) or Kidscents Dreamease (Kids)
– 10 Drops Cedarwood

Add your Witch Hazel and Essential oils in the spray bottle and top up with distilled or previously boiled and cooled water. Shake before use.

I’d love to know how you make your home smell amazing, let me know in the comments!
